World Cup Crowd Control Concerns

14. June 2010 13:04

The eyes of the world are on South Africa and the World Cup this week, where crowd control weighs heavily on the minds of FIFA officials.  “We are working tirelessly to ensure this is one of the best tournaments that FIFA has hosted. We want people to come and enjoy themselves, secure in the knowledge that we will do the policing,” said Vishnu Naidoo, spokesman for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Recently, due to a lack of appropriate crowd control, what was to be a friendly free match between Nigeria & North Korea turned into a bit of a melee, leaving 16 people injured. Many believe that better security measures, such as the addition of steel barricades, could have prevented this unfortunate incident.
