How Tensator can help improve workplace accessibility

Figures from the charity Scope show that there are currently 3.4 million disabled workers in the UK. Companies have a legal obligation to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for employees who have a disability to improve workplace accessibility and can be done by implementing health and safety systems. Creating disability inclusion in the workplace should be a top priority for employers and the UK economy as a whole, since it’s estimated that just a 10% rise in employment within this demographic would contribute an additional £12 billion to the treasury by 2030.

Taking on a disabled employee brings a range of benefits, not just to that person who is able to live more independently, but also to the wider workforce. Creating disability diversity in the workplace attracts the most talented prospects and builds a culture of inclusivity. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says that safety is cited as a reason why some employers do not take on a person with a disability, even though there are ‘very few cases’ where groups of workers can be excluded. New technology is helping to make workplaces both safer and more accessible for all.

How Tensabarriers can be used to improve workplace accessibility whilst maintaining safety

It’s not uncommon for a workplace to want to temporarily cordon off restricted areas to employees. Although these restrictions are enforced with a worker’s wellbeing in mind, often the barriers can become a dangerous obstacle for wheelchair users. Tensabarrier®’s new Universal Base has a rounded, lower profile and low leading edges, allowing wheelchair users to pass over the base easily. The Universal Base also reduces the risk of trips or falls to those with limited sight.

The webbing and post colour of Tensabarriers can be customised in order to provide maximum visibility to those with vision-related disabilities. As a recommendation, we advise choosing a colour that is in contrast to immediate surroundings. When placing Tensabarriers in the workplace, position post bases at least 900mm (1200mm post to post) apart to allow for wheelchair access.
